Chatting with Joel de la Fuente

(Thanksgiving Holidays)

-- Reported by Sparhawk --

A chat was held on November 28, 1997 with Joel de la Fuente at his Official site. It was organized by the webmaster, Dennis Paulsen and participation was stupendous! There were people from all over. America, Australia, Canada, Oman, Indonesia, Singapore, and of course, representatives from the 88th Firebirds, Malaysia! These excerpts are from the log from when I joined in. There might have been more at the beginning, I'm not sure. I was on time. Joel was early.

I have tried to categorise the conversations into subject matter to make it easier to follow. But some might spill over into one another. So, hope this tells you something informative!

The Chat

Re: Discussion Board Activity Request

Joel
I wanted to ask you all a question...And I want to take advantage of this great chat room supplied by Dennis. Ah. My question was revolving around how to get the page more interactive with everyone. I want people to really take advantage of posting on the board and using the chat room. Spread the word. Comments, ideas, criticisms, announcements. Use the board!

Sparhawk's note: He was referring to the interactive Discussion Board on his page at http://www.joeldela.com So, listen to the guy. Go there, post your messages, talk about him, his work, his achivements... whatever. From what I see, he keeps that site monitored. And that is the best way to get in touch with him, if you want to. Well, he's the only actor I know who keeps in touch with his fans!

Re: Discussions?

WAPBodie
Joel, maybe links to sites you've found interesting would encourage people to go to them and then discuss them? Not just SAAB sites, but just stuff that interests you...

Joel
karen, I was hoping people could discuss, SAAB questions, ER stuff, etc as well.

Garuda
Joel: And Due South? ;D

Sparhawk
can we discuss due south?! ;D

Joel
Of course, Spar!

Sparhawk
thank you kindly, joel! :D

Re: S:AAB Return?

Dave1
Joel Is there any word of SAAB starting again because all of us In Australia want to know what happens to you and everyone else

Joel
So, Dave. No word on a return. Reruns are starting on the sci fi channel here in the States.

WAPBodie
It's showing now in Canada, Joel

Dave1
Yes Foxtel have just started reruning SAAB here (to popular demand)

Blackwing
Joel,will FOX make S:AAB again??for season 2

Joel
BlackWing, sorry. Don't know the answer to that one. It's your support that's keeping the question alive.

Re: Joel's future projects

FLKFREK
Well, I'd like to start out my questions... Have you auditioned for anything recently?

Joel
Flk, yes. I'm waiting on a few things right now. Hopefully, I will have things to post in the coming weeks... <knock wood>

WAPBodie
Use my head, Joel.. it's solid oak....

Joel
LOL, Karen!

Joel
As of now, I am up for some projects. But nothing to report. Check the page and hopefully by the holiday (X-mas) there will be something to say!

Re: Where is eveyone from?

Joel
Where else is everyone from out there?

Sparhawk's note: A host of countries are named as above

Joel
Terrific! This is amazing. Well welcome from all over! It's nice to see so many old friends... and so many new ones. :)

Re: Did Wang Die?

Dave1
In that final Episode when the chig fighter attacked the detached part of the Isscv did your charicter die or will it be that you survived

CatO
WANG LIVES!!!!!!!!!!!!

Joel
Dave, it depends on whether or not the show comes back.

FLKFREK
Has there even been a talk about a SAAB 2 hour movie for FOX?

Joel
No talk as of yet, chuck.

Re: Lines, lines and more lines...

Lizarina
BTW - Ray Butts aired last night and the testicles line was IN

Joel
I was so mad when it got cut in the States!

Poopzee
It should have been kept in..it was PERFECT for the scene

Joel
The testicle line was a goodie. We worked probably an extra three hours just to get those shots. Some lines were improved... Sayonara baby was made up because I forgot the line. That was from "The Enemy." Yelling the names of falling comrades was also an improv from "Tell Our Moms."

WAPBodie
Joel, that was just heart-wrenching...

Silencer41
and a bit depressing

Joel
Silencer, it was depressing for ME! I didn't know the ship exploded until I watched it on tv...I was with Morrison. We looked at the tv and didn't know what to do. We started laughin.

WAPBodie
Ah, Joel... better to laugh than cry, huh?

Joel
Well, Karen, "a man's gotta have hope."

Poopzee
I think it's safe to say you had some GREAT one liners, Joel. Always some comic relief at the right time.

Re: Confusion?

Joel
Garuda, you're my friend who works in DC, right?

Garuda
Joel: Eh? What? I'm from Malaysia

Joel
Ah. Forgive Garuda. I got confused for a sec.

Re: Pearly and a shocker!

Helen
I watched "Pearly" last night, again. You were outstanding, Joel.

Joel
Helen, you are GOLD! :)

binke
I liked Pearly a lot. All except for the tears from the APC

Poopzee
And don't forget, Wang got to kiss 2 girls...:)

Joel
Wang got to kiss all the boys too, but they won't show that episode. From what I understand, though, there is a lot of fanfic that gives attention to those...

WAPBodie
LOL!! James mentioned the European version once.. ;)

binke
Oh Karen! You never told us!

WAPBodie
Bink, he was kidding!

Poopzee
Well, at least Wang didn't discriminate..hee hee

Re: Something for Asia

Joel
I have a question for my friends in Asia... Anyone speak Cantonese?

Sparhawk's note: All say no

Joel
I got NAILED in a few letters about my line in Cantonese in "Due south."

Sparhawk
i think i was one of them? ;D

Joel
:)

Garuda
Yep, me and Spar and Per

wildfire
What did you say? :)

Joel
Well, it was partially English and partialy Cantonese. The translation was "Check him for a wire." And "wire" was spoken in english.

WAPBodie
They probably gave it to you phonetically, huh, Joel?

Joel
Yeah phonetically, Karen. And I worked on it for a DAY.

Garuda
Joel: Didn't sound anything like that, from what I heard

Sparhawk
but you were a great bad guy, Joel so we forgive you. :D

WAPBodie
Does "wire" translate to a naughty??

Joel
LOL!

binke
Did you end up saying something baaad Joel?

Joel
Bink, anytime anyone says "something baaad" I think immediately of fingers...

Re: Conventions

Joel
Any conventions overseas coming up?

WAPBodie
There's the one in England in March...

Dave1
Joel There is a sci fi one in adelaide 6 mnths from now with a number of actors comming over

Sparhawk
are you planning to go to any overseas?

Joel
I would go overseas if the timing was right.

Sparhawk
i'm jealous about this Con business... :(

Swoop
why Spar?

Sparhawk
because i can't go to any!!

Joel
I think we need "continent cons." one for each continent.

Sparhawk
we can *try*, Joel. :D

WAPBodie
Sounds great, Joel!

Re: Fave Guest Stars

Joel
Another question, favorite guest star? least favorite?

Sparhawk's note: Answers range from Doug Hutchinson to Steve Rankin to Coolio and David Duchovny, but the overwhelming fave is Doug Hutchinson (Elroy-El)

Joel
Man oh man. I'm telling Doug. He will be so happy.

WAPBodie
I've only seen Doug in eerie roles... I'm beginning to wonder if it's typecasting or just Doug!

Joel
I saw a pilot doug was in-- a sitcom. He was so funny and harmless!

Re: Filming 'Sugar Dirt'

Dave1
The heat from the explosion melted the sugar into the dirt.<--- Paul Wang

Joel
Dave, I did that Sugar Dirt scene right before lunch and rodney was throwing things at me laughin. The dirt was not a tasty appetitzer.

WAPBodie
Joel... real dirt? They didn't mock something up? Ick...

Joel
It was supposed to be sugar, but parts were real dirt.

Re: Joel's fave eps

Dave1
Joel what was the best episode in your veiw mine was Tell our moms

Joel
Same, Dave. I also like the first double eps and "River of Stars."

Re: Joel's fave Films

FLKFREK
Besides "Sophie's Choice", what are some of your other favorite films?

Joel
FLK, my current hot fave is "Shawshank Redemption."

Re: Joel on 'Starship Troopers'

Crow88
Joel, what do you think of Starship troopers ?

Joel
Crow, mainly I won't because the lead role is supposed to be Filipino. And they sold that baby out.

Re: Joel on stage

Sparhawk
do you do stage, Joel?

Joel
Sparhawk, the next thing I do may exactly be that. A play. and in Europe...

Sparhawk
rats...europe...

Re: Joel in Asia

Wildfire
Ever been to Asia, Joel?

Joel
I've been to the Philippines and to Hong Kong and Singapore.

Re: Joel and his computer

WAPBodie
Joel, when you got the regular gig on SAAB, what was the first thing you did just for yourself?

Joel
Funny question, Karen. And appropriate. I bought my computer!

Kyril
a Mac right? what kind of mac?

Joel
520C

Re: Another Chat? and a reminder

Joel
i will try to do as many as i can. but my schedule is strange, and my access to a good computer is too.,..perhaps over the christmas holiday is the best possibility. Thanks to everyone. I want to say (I know it's for the third time) but I am accessible! Post on the board. Disagree. Say hello. Post an opinion or a question. Tell everyone to do it. Let's get dialogue on those boards!

Joel
Good night everyone. Best wishes to all. And wonderful holidays!

And that was just a part of what went on in the chatroom. I have edited it some, and tried to filter out the repeat quotes and just tried to leave the main messages in here. It is, by no means an indicator of what really went on, but it's a darned sight easier on the eyes than ploughing through logs! <grin>
