Leadership in a Voluntary Organization
Concurrent Session I
Speaker Mr. Dunstan Chan Date 3rd June, 2002 Time 1330 - 1500
Seminar Synopsis
Imagine this scenario: The boss of ABC company looks sternly at his salesman, “Mr. Yeo, you have not been able to meet the sales target for this month, and the month before that, and the month before that. I’ll give you one more month. If you don’t buck up I’ll have to ship you out.”

Well, as leaders of a voluntary organization, we don’t have that luxury of firing and hiring. The leaders of a voluntary organization have to work with whatever people we have, people who have willingly, and sometimes not so willingly, given time and effort to help out in the organization. It demands special leadership skill to get all these volunteers to pull together towards a common goal. Though there is no fear of being fired to motivate the members, they are potentially more dedicated than employees of a company. They are driven by their love of the cause.

In this seminar we will discuss:
· What are the qualities expected of a leader
· What are the different styles of leadership
· How to match the most appropriate style to a given situation.
· How to build the “super team”

About Dunstan Chan
Dunstan Chan was trained as a Barrister in the United Kingdom. After a stint as a legal advisor he went on to work with the Europe-Third World Research Project in London. In 1980 he set up a publishing consultancy firm, which he ran until 1989 when he left England and came back to Malaysia.
Dunstan is exposed to the many cultures of the world, having been educated, lived and worked in both the East and West. He has also visited over twenty-five countries in the last thirty years. With his rich experience and training Dunstan Chan is able to design speeches and training workshops relevant to many needs.
In the last ten years, he has established himself as a well sought after public speaker, who has given motivational and keynote speeches in the Asia-Pacific region.
He is a prominent member of Toastmasters International and has also served in the leadership position in a number of organizations, notably as the Chairman of the Fund-raising Committee of the Sarawak Thalassaemia Society; as a member of the Management Committee of the Sarawak Club; as a committee member of the Malaysian Sports Divers Association; as the Honorary Secretary of the Sarawak Amateur Volleyball Association; as a committee member of the Harrow and District North London Chinese Association.
