SARAWAK OPEN SQUASH TOURNAMENT
WISPA EVENT AND PSA EVENT

11-14 JUNE 1998
Main Venue Kuching Civic Centre

Sponsoring Hotels:-Holiday Inn Kuching for the Men & Regalis Court for the women.
Received the final list of registered players from PSA & WISPA for the event. The players come from Egypt, Pakistan , England, Wales, Japan, Finland, Singapore, Jordan and Australia. We look forward to greeting all these players in Sarawak and are very excited about the prospect of having so many talented players from different countries to take part. Such great exposure for our local players.

Last year SRAM(Sarawak Branch) organised a successful Sarawak Open Competition.

The event this year is endorsed by the State Government of Sarawak and the Sarawak Tourism Board who will be promoting the event as part of its "SPORTS AND TOURISM YEAR 1998" in its publications. We are fortunate to have Deputy Chief Minister YB Dr. George Chan as the patron.

The event is scheduled for the 9-14 June 1998 with ISPF (International Squash Players Federation) ranked players participating. Prize money to be USD12,000 for men and USD6,000 for the women. We are really hoping for a good response!! It will be the first International Squash event for women to be competing in Sarawak.

The venue was at the Civic Centre for the main events in a special 4 sided glass court . The qualifying matches for the men were also there.

The first round of the matches for both Men and Women were held in the Sarawak Club where all four courts were used. It was quite hot and some european players found the games tough.

The upset of the tournament was with Paul Price overcoming the Malaysian top player Kenneth Low and also the top seed Zubair. The final was played between Zarak Jahan Khan the older brother of Zubair.

The players and spectators had some great matches and the venue at the Civic Centre is ideal with a top class court to play on and a cool temperature to play at top form. The WISPA players took advantage of the 3 days to relax at the Damai Lagoon before their next competition the Kuala Lumpur leg.

We look forward to welcoming visitors to Sarawak to play squash and have a fun time. We produced a Souvenir magazine so any interested corporations, companies or individuals wishing to be "friends of Squash" please contact us. We welcome all to support squash in Sarawak.
