A First Aider In Every Home

‘A First Aider In Every Home’ Programme is one of the community service of the Malaysian Red Crescent Society. This programme was officially launched by the Federal Minister of Health, YB Datuk Chua Jui Meng on 12th August 1995 at the National Headquarters, Kuala Lumpur. In Sarawak, this programme was officially launched by the State Minister of Finance and Utilities who is also the Chairman of Malaysian Red Crescent Society, Sarawak Branch, YB Datuk George Chan Hong Nam on 16th December 1995 at Kuching Hilton.

The launching marks the beginning of a ten years programme which aimed to produce at least one first aider in every home. The objective of this programme is to provide first aid training to the community and help people feel more confident of their ability to respond to an emergency and how to act appropriately in the event of an emergency.

It is our mission that by the year 2005, at least one member in each Malaysian family will have been trained in First Aid and life-saving skills and thereby contributing to promote the concept of a caring society. According to 1991 population census, the total population in Sarawak is 1,625,599. Based on an average of 6 persons per family, there are 270,933 families. Since we are aiming at one First Aider in every home, we need to train 270,933 First Aiders by the year 2005. On the assumption that 20% of Sarawakians have already acquired First Aid knowledge in the past as indicated in above, it means that we still have to conduct training for approximately 210,000 people (i.e. 216,746) by the year 2005. As such each year, we need to train up about 21,000 people yearly. During the first year of the implementation the various Red Crescent Chapters met in Sibu and had drawn up a programme to train 8,000 people initially, i.e. 1,500 in Kuching Chapter; 1,200 in Sibu & Miri Chapters; 800 in Sarikei & Bintulu Chapters and 500 in Serian, Lundu, Sri Aman, Limbang and Kapit Chapters.

Our main target groups are the staff and students in schools, colleges and institutions of learning; employees of Government Offices and Statutory bodies; members of youth organisations, service clubs and associations; residents in housing estates, kampongs and longhouses. The can approach the Malaysian Red Crescent Society at their respective Chapters to request for the first aid courses to be conducted.

Instructors involved in the teaching of the programme will follow a standardised syllabus which will be delivered in the form of video presentation, lectures, demonstrations and practical sessions. The course duration will be 6½ hours covering three major areas. Responding to an emergency will be covered important area is the Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for adults. In this 2½ hours session, topics which include breathing emergencies such as choking, artificial respiration, external cardiac massage, recognising a heart attack and prevention of cardiaovascular diseases. Finally, another 2½ hours will cover the various first aid measures in dealing with injuries to muscles, bones & joints, wounds, shock, burns and sudden illness.

Certificates of Attendance will be issued to the participants at the conclusion of the course.

Through this programme, efforts can also be made to recruit those who are interested in this humanitarian movement as red Crescent members.
