History & Contribution

Formation of Miri Jaycees

In early 1962, JCI Senator John Leong was invited by JCI Senator Sim Kheng Lung to attend a JCI Conference in Kuching. After his return from Kuching, JCI Senator John Leong invited a group of 13 young men together, whose names are noted below, to the 4th Divisional Youth Council building for the discussion about the formation of Miri Chapter of the Junior Chamber of Commerce:

Foo Chia Choon
Chong Fung Ping
James Ting
David Chia
Ling Uong Leh
Dicken Tan Boon Kim
Abdul Rasul Khan
D.A. Dwason
Kwan Chee Ming
Yong Chon Yee

A very successful meeting was held, with everyone attending agreeing to form the Chapter unanimously.

The Chapter was subsequently registered on 24th October 1962 with JCI Senator John Leong as its Chartered President for a duration of four years. In 1963, he was awarded the JCI Senatorship and became the first JCI Senator in Miri.
