SOME MALAY CUSTOMS
AND CEREMONIES

immeidately after the bersanding ceremony. In the background is the bridal

These people are returning from their pilgrimage
to Mecca. Relatives and friends throung at the wharf to greet them.

An Imam. He is a haji, and is dressed in a jubah
(Arab costume).

Inside a mosque. These men are meditating after
the prayers. The five men who are not wearing songkoks are Hajis.

The makan Selamat ceremony. The man carrying
the try may be going overseas, or may have just recovered from a serious
illness, and is therefore blessed by the elders who sprinkle beras kuning
(yellow rice) and tepong tawar on him. The two babies are being blessed
likewise, after which their hair may be saved of - the Berchukor Ceremony.
